Investigate these opportunities ; you’ll be glad that you probably did.

People are quite often of the opinion that Plasma Displays are very much the latest in a series of technologies in use within the Flat Screen TV industry of today whereas in fact it is one of the oldest of the technologies available

If we look at the basics of the technology behind it we find that in its simplistic form it is the heating up of tiny cells with inert gasses trapped between two panels of glass that comprise a Plasma Display Screen.

If we take a look at couple of Plasma Flat Screen TV?s we can see exactly what there is in the marketplace right now.

The first Plasma we will take a look at is the LG 50PC1D?

The 50PC1D is a 50in Plasma TV and the prices for these would be in the region of 1500 pounds sterling or 3000 US dollars. The resolution of the screen is 1366 X 768 and with regards to being HD Ready the answer is yes. The LG has 3 (2 RGB) scarts and the type and number of Multimedia interfaces the 50PC1D uses is HDMI and 2. The type of Tuner for this TV is Analogue and Digital and the LG is available from a wide variety of outlets.

So to take an initial view how would we rate LG 50PC1D?

Well to start with our score for the picture quality is 6 out of 10, and closely tied in to the picture quality is the sound quality and our score for this would be 8 out of 10. With regards to the availability and number of relevant connections, our score would be 8 out of 10. If we take a look at the overall “featureability” our score would be 8 out of 10 if we then take a look at the ease of use and overall value for money then our scores would be 6 and 6 out of 10 respectively.

The overall verdict would be that the overall performance of this Plasma we felt was rather good if not let down slightly by a noisy picture but on the other hand compared against similar machines this is on the cheap side so that has to be a plus also.

(The next Plasma Flat Screen TV to look at would be the|Next up amongst the Plasma Flat Screen TV?s to look at would be the} Vivadi Saturn HD50.

The Saturn HD50 is a 50in Plasma TV and the prices for these would be in the region of 8000 pounds sterling or 16000 US dollars. The resolution of the screen is 1366 X 768 and with regards to being HD Ready the answer is yes. The Vivadi has 1 (no RGB) scarts and the type and number of Multimedia interfaces the Saturn HD50 uses is HDMI and 2. The type of Tuner for this TV is Analogue and Digital and the Vivadi is available from limited outlets only.

So to take an initial view how would we rate Vivadi Saturn HD50?

Well to start with our score for the picture quality is 10 out of 10, and closely tied in to the picture quality is the sound quality and our score for this would be 10 out of 10. With regards to the availability and number of relevant connections, our score would be 10 out of 10. If we take a look at the overall “featureability” our score would be 10 out of 10 if we then take a look at the ease of use and overall value for money then our scores would be 8 and 6 out of 10 respectively.

The overall verdict would be when you look at the scores we gave it you get a fairly good picture of what our team felt when they reviewed. This may sound slightly stupid and very obvious but now and then you can give a Tva good score on a technical basis but not really “fall in love” with the entire package. In this case the big down side is the price it has to be said but if you have the cash or can get your hands (legally) on the money thenm do whatever you have to do to get one of these pieces of kit. The Picture quality alone just leaves most people speechless!

Since 2006, which according to analysts was very much a watershed year in that it was the year that LCD TV?s really started to take market share from the Plasma manufacturers, LCD TV?s have started to share the large screen market with Plasmas. One of the other areas of consolidation within the Industry has seen the Plasma manufacturing base very much consolidate with now over 50 brands being manufactured by only 5 companies ? this of course has led to economies of scale hitherto imagined where the technology of more and more screens can be shared and further help cut the overall cost base.

“Prosperity: The eternal flow of all that’s good in life…”

By Carl “J. C. ” Pantejo, Copyright January 2008

(Author “My Friend Yu – The Prosperity Mentor,” Copyright August 2007. Pantejo – Y. N. Vurce Publishing. )

*Below is the eighth episode in a series of real life events experienced by the author. The only deviations from the truth may be the names of people and places. These stories are also incorporated in “My Friend Yu – the Prosperity Mentor: Book II,” Pantejo – Y. N. Vurce Publishing. Release Date: 2008.

In “Experiences from ‘The Flow’ (7) – Living Well? Farangs and Finance: The Myth,” I explained that most Thai people believe that “ALL FARANGS (Thai: foreigners) ARE RICH. ” The reasons for this? Free-spending tourists, currency power, and, by Thai standards, “luxurious” living.

In this article, I will describe the reality for most Farangs’ living in Thailand.

After reading about the “real deal” – the financial life and cultural pressures bestowed upon most Farangs in Thailand, I hope you begin to understand that life in “Paradise” has its challenges.

- Reality -

Most Farangs living in Thailand, especially Farang teachers, barely make ends meet. By the time normal living expenses are accounted for, there’s little (if any) leftover from their meager monthly salaries.

In fact, they usually suffer from the “too much month leftover after the money” crisis.

Additionally, Farangs must pay for their visas and work permits. If they should absently let their visas expire, they must pay 500 baht per day of over-stay.

Those Farangs who have not obtained their work permits are forced to make monthly trips outside of Thailand to one of the neighboring countries (e. g. , Laos, Cambodia, or Vietnam) before their 30-day visa expires – an expense that Thai people do not have to deal with.

Granted, some Farangs piss away their money on booze and women (a convenient pastime to be found everywhere). But in my experience, many Farangs simply fall short financially because they cannot enjoy all the money-saving benefits of being Thai (e. g. , living rent-free with their parents, local Thai prices, a huge safety network of friends and family to rely on during emergencies, etc. ).

Furthermore, Farangs are pressured by their Thai friends and Thai society to appear richer than they actually are.

I have a Farang friend who didn’t need (or even want) a car. But, according to local Thai culture, “All Farangs, especially old, stable, and married Farang teachers, should drive a car. ” If they didn’t have a car, something must be “wrong” with him.

Maybe he had a few “Mia Noi’s” (translated: minor wife or wives, concubine or mistresses) that took the better part of his salary to maintain? Maybe he was a drunk or drug addict? Believe me, Thai’s can come up with some imaginative scenarios; scenarios that actually are played out in many Thai households.

Since he needed to “look the part” of a rich, old Farang English teacher, he and his wife ended up purchasing a vehicle. Not doing so would have doomed them both to public and private shame. Life for them would have been unbearable in the Mubon (Thai: village) and Soi (Street).

But, of course, now they must deal with a 5-year, monthly “mortgage” for their vehicle; a vehicle they probably will never drive often because of the stifling traffic jams in and around Bangkok.

Fortunately, since I am single and younger, I can get away with simply driving my motorcycle.

And personally, I couldn’t justify paying a large car note over many years just to satisfy societal expectations – especially for a car I neither needed, nor wanted!

I’d rather keep my age, status, and profession a secret from all but my closest friends – or simply move to another Mubon or Soi.

It doesn’t end there.

Thai culture also lends itself toward putting young Thais at an advantage (financially) over older Farangs.

Many times, after being invited to dinner at a restaurant or BBQ by my Thai friends, colleagues, or students, I still ended up footing the bill. Why? 1) Because I’m a Farang and 2) I’m usually the oldest person in the group. In Thai culture, with the exception of non-working parents/grandparents, the oldest person normally pays for the whole group.

Another big expense that most Farangs are not used to is the expense of relationships.

A Farang boyfriend is normally obligated to support not just his partner, but also the family of his partner. If he doesn’t acquiesce to this accepted social norm, it sends a clear message to all: This Farang is stingy, a “Cheap Charlie,” “Kee Nee Ow” – translated: “sticky shit,” you can’t squeeze anything out of it! Therefore; since he’s so cheap with her, he really doesn’t love his girlfriend.

In fact, as distasteful as it may sound to most foreigners, a Thai woman will not consider ANY relationship or ANY suitor as being serious unless she receives something of substantial monetary value first (e. g. , jewelry, a mobile phone, motorcycle, ATM account, car, etc. ).

I’m lucky to enjoy an ex-pat, military monthly pension and don’t have to rely solely on my English teacher salary for my living expenses. Several times during my two-year stay in Thailand, I have lent out money to many Farang teachers because they didn’t have enough money to eat.

Money is REGARDED IN TOTALLY DIFFERENT TERMS in Asia than it is in the West. In Western countries, money is a tool to be used to enjoy life. Furthermore, Money issues and Love are separated in the West.

In Asia, money means LIFE, LOVE – EVERYTHING. Since the majority of Asian people are poverty stricken, money can mean the difference between life and death; happiness and sadness, hate and love, bachelorhood and marriage, etc.

Want an example?

About three years ago, while living in a remote part of Asia, I witnessed dozens of totally preventable deaths (usually from common illnesses or infections) simply because the people were too poor to make the trip to the next town’s hospital, pay for a doctor, or pay for medicine (common, over-the-counter antibiotics). Of course, the hospital didn’t have an ambulance and medical insurance was unheard of.

- Stupidity and Hard Knocks -

Needless to say, I watched my new girlfriend’s spending habits closely…

…and was delightfully surprised.

After two years of living in Thailand, and especially these last few months living with Nueng (Thai: Number One), I realized how dumb I was (monetarily and otherwise) with the ex-girlfriend.

I now know just how expensive and wasteful my ex-girlfriend really was.

The magnitude of my stupidity?

Well, to begin with, I used to give her (the ex) the equivalent of a normal Thai working man’s daily wage in the morning JUST FOR HER BREAKFAST. Then I would come home and give her the same amount JUST FOR OUR DINNER!

She also enjoyed an exorbitant monthly allowance (allegedly for her living expenses and aging mother). The amount easily surpassed the monthly salary for a college educated, 60+ hours a week, Thai teacher!

Lastly, twice a month, I would give her “toiletry” money. Supposedly, the money was for shampoo, lotion, soap, etc.

I now know that the amount of money I gave her every two weeks for her hygiene needs was enough money to spend a full day at the mall shopping, entertaining her friends, eating at a restaurant, and sometimes, even watching a movie!

What did she use the money for? Who knows? What I do know is that she never saved ANY money I gave her. By the time I came home from work everyday, she was always flat broke.

In contrast, Nueng and I live nicely (and happily) on a fraction of the ex-girlfriend’s expenses alone!

Nueng saves almost every baht that I give her.

When she spends any money (her money or mine) she gives me the receipt. She does this to show me that she’s not wasting our money AND to make it clear that she isn’t hiding anything from me.

Since she just ended a long relationship of lies, infidelity, and abuse; honesty is very, very important to her.

And as a veteran of a recent abusive relationship, it’s a central issue for me too…

Thanks to technological advancements, people have decided to make lifestyle changes and have flocked by their thousands to start home based businesses. Home based businesses is the largest growing segment of small businesses today and unlike previous decades anyone who has a computer and internet connection has the ability to start their own home based business literally overnight.
Home based businesses can afford greater flexibility over our lives and can really give us a sense of freedom. With this sense of freedom there are also pitfalls that many home based business owners make that can really set them back.
Here are 7 stupid things people do working from home that can be disastrous to your new found freedom and financial well being.
1. Taking their new found freedom to literally. Your now the boss, you’ve been waiting for this moment. No more boss to report to and no stuffy corporate environment to inhibit and hold you back. Instead of taking this as a chance to stretch yourself you instead take the new freedom to literally and spend countless hours watching day time soaps instead of working. You get distracted by household chores and go on endless errands during work hours because you can. The reality is that just because you have your home business doesn’t mean you can slack off and work when you feel like it. The reality is that unlike in the workplace where you can work to the barest minimum expectation and still get paid, here if you don’t work hard you don’t get paid. Eventually your sloppiness is going to catch up and you are going to struggle to pay the bills. So before you get excited you need to realize that you are going to have to work harder than you did for your boss only this time you will reap the rewards.
2. They go overboard with the work. You started a home based business for a reason, maybe it was so that you can spend quality time with your family, maybe it was to enable you to stay at home with your young children or maybe it was for a better lifestyle choice. So a few months into the new home business you see these very people working twice the hours they used to when they were working only now instead of taking their work home with them they have the work with them at home 24 hours a day. These people can’t seem to switch off from their business because there is always something to do and never seems to be enough time to get them done. Don’t let that be you. Learn to switch off completely from work and set up scheduled times when you will work and when you will spend with your family so that you don’t feel guilty for spending time with your loved ones.
3. They don’t know how to delegate. If you look at your former workplace you weren’t expected to do everything. They had people doing a particular task and others doing another task. The reality is that all good businesses know how to delegate tasks and functions to people who are going to do them best. This isn’t going to be the case with a new startup home based business simply because you may not have the financial resources to delegate everything that you want to. However you can do some simple things to delegate things to people if you realize how much you can save by doing it. For example if it is going to take you 6 hours to get your monthly bookkeeping records up to date but it will cost 3 hours and $600 to delegate to the bookkeeper you can decide can you make better use of your six hours and will you in that period make more than $600 to pay for the bookkeeper. If so then delegate. The more you focus on your core competences and delegate the rest the better off you will be and your business. Not only will you be doing things you enjoy and keep your enthusiasm for your business high you are also giving opportunities to help others do what they are competent at.
4. They buy themselves a job instead of building a business. The point of going into business is so that you can create some sense of financial freedom and to provide a product or service to your target market. However many people who start home based businesses soon realize that it just isn’t economically viable and instead of calling it a day and start a different business with better prospects or go back to the workforce they instead hold onto their dream like it’s the last glamour of hope in their lives. You can spot these people because they keep pumping their savings into a business or they get their loved one who has worked hard for their paycheck to invest into their business. They hold onto the hope that one day the business will grow but it generally never does. If your business isn’t viable then all you have is you have bought yourself a job where you are overworked and for some people they may even be volunteering for the pleasure of owning a business because they can’t even draw an income. Sure during the startup period many businesses owners choose to reinvest the profits back into their business and sure some business takes longer than others to break even but you know after time whether the business is going to work and because you are home based there isn’t any reason why you can’t start again with another venture after all you have now learnt some valuable lessons. Don’t hold onto an empty dream if it isn’t performing.
5. The dream to small and settle. You might have a home based business but that doesn’t mean you have to think small. The greatest shame is seeing home based business owners who only think small because they see themselves as a small business owner. The reality is that many great well known companies started out in dorm rooms, in someone’s garage or on the kitchen table. There is no reason to create limitations on yourself if you want to create a large company. Great things can start off small, just dream big and take one day at a time.

The ostrich is mentioned 10 times in the Bible. The ostrich’s behavior is mentioned in the Bible in the dialogue between God and Job. In this dialogue the Lord God, the Almighty Creator describes the ostrich as: She is joyfully proud of its small wings, She is unmindful of the safety of its nest, She treats her offspring harshly, She is lacks in wisdom, she is stupid. The ostrich’s labor is not in vain And yet she can put a horse to shame with its speed. In addition, God described to Job how he created the ostrich with no good sense. On the other hand, scientists say that the ostrich has good sense; with their acute eyesight and hearing, they can sense predators such as lions from far away. The question is:  Would the Almighty Creator who creates the ostrich say that? Do these Biblical verses reflect a primitive, incorrect knowledge about the ostrich? That is why the Quran says: Woe, to those who write the Scripture with their hands then say: This is from God Nevertheless, the ostrich is not mentioned therein in the Quran. Yet, the Quran says that the birds in general live in societies like human beings.   ======================================================   ?? The ostrich in the Bible (1)   Is the Bible mistaken about the ostrich? The Bible says that the Lord God, the Almighty Creator, said unto Job that the ostrich is a stupid bird that lays its eggs on the ground, leaves them to be hatched by the heat of the sand, and then she treats her young harshly after they have hatched. In contrast, scientists describe the ostrich as a very caring parent. Laying eggs on the ground, rather than being a sign of neglect, is just something some birds normally do; and while the female may leave the nest, the male incubates the nest in her absence. In the meantime, when the young hatch, they are given attentive care by their mother. Therefore, the verses are in error from the scientific point of view. Moreover, the ostrich’s labor is not in vain. It goes without saying that the Almighty Creator who creates the ostrich and knows very well everything about it would say that about the ostrich.   ——————————————————————–   Job 39:13-18   New International Version 13 “The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, but they cannot compare with the pinions and feathers of the stork. 14 She lays her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand, 15 unmindful that a foot may crush them, that some wild animal may trample them. 16 She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; she cares not that her labor was in vain, 17 for God did not endow her with wisdom or give her a share of good sense. 18 Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider.   American Standard Version 13 The wings of the ostrich wave proudly; but are they the pinions and plumage of love? 14 For she leaveth her eggs on the earth, and warmeth them in the dust, 15 And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, Or that the wild beast may trample them. 16 She dealeth hardly with her young ones, as if they were not hers: Though her labor be in vain, she is without fear; 17 Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding. 18 What time she lifteth up herself on high, She scorneth the horse and his rider.   King James Version 13Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich? 14Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust, 15And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them. 16She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not her’s: her labour is in vain without fear; 17Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding. 18What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.   Young’s Literal Translation 13The wing of the rattling ones exulteth, Whether the pinion of the ostrich or hawk. 14For she leaveth on the earth her eggs, and on the dust she doth warm them, 15And she forgetteth that a foot may press it, And a beast of the field tread it down. 16Her young ones it hath hardened without her, in vain [is] her labour without fear. 17For God hath caused her to forget wisdom; And He hath not given a portion to her in understanding: 18At the time on high she lifteth herself up, she laugheth at the horse and at his rider.   ======================================================   The ostrich in the Quran (1)   The ostrich is not mentioned therein in the Quran; yet the birds in general are mentioned 12 times in the Quran. In respect to the ostrich in the Quran, the following points will be discussed:   1) Allah is the Creator of all things 2) Allah has created every creeping creature from water 3) Animals and Birds are but societies like human beings. 4) Allah created and proportioned His creature, making it of well-proportioned parts, without irregularities, and guided his creatures to what He had determined. 5) Woe, to those who write the Scripture with their hands then say: This is from God ——————————————————————–   1) Allah is the Creator of all things   Verse 39:62 QARIB: Allah is the creator of all things, and of all things he is the guardian. SHAKIR: Allah is the creator of every thing and he has charge over every thing PICKTHAL: Allah is creator of all things, and he is guardian over all things. YUSUFALI: Allah is the creator of all things, and he is the guardian and disposer of all affairs.   The meanings of the verse 39:62 Allah is the Creator of all things and He is Guardian over all things, disposing of them as He will. He is the disposer of all affairs. ——————————————————————–   2) Allah has created every creeping creature from water   Verse 24:45   QARIB: Allah created everything that walks from water. Some creep upon their bellies, others walk on two feet, and others walk on four. Allah creates whatever he will. Allah is powerful over everything. SHAKIR: and Allah has created from water every living creature: so of them is that which walks upon its belly and of them is that which walks upon two feet and of them is that which walks upon four; Allah creates what he pleases; surely Allah has power over all things PICKTHAL: Allah hath created every animal of water. Of them is (a kind) that goeth upon its belly and (a kind) that goeth upon two legs and (a kind) that goeth upon four. Allah createth what he will. Lo! Allah is able to do all things. YUSUFALI: and Allah has created every animal from water: of them there are some that creep on their bellies; some that walk on two legs; and some that walk on four. Allah creates what he wills for verily Allah has power over all things.   The meanings of the verse 24:45 And Allah has created every creeping creature from water. Among them are some that creep upon their bellies and among them are some that walk on two feet, and among them are some that walk on four. Allah creates whatever He will. Truly Allah has power over all things. ——————————————————————–   3) Animals and Birds are but societies like human beings.   Verse 6:38   QARIB: there is no crawling creature on the earth, nor a bird that flies with its two wings, but they are nations like you. We have neglected nothing in the book. They shall all be gathered before their lord. SHAKIR: and there is no animal that walks upon the earth nor a bird that flies with its two wings but (they are) genera like yourselves; we have not neglected anything in the book, then to their lord shall they be gathered PICKTHAL: there is not an animal in the earth, nor a flying creature flying on two wings, but they are peoples like unto you. We have neglected nothing in the book (of our decrees). Then unto their lord they will be gathered. YUSUFALI: there is not an animal (that lives) on the earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but (forms part of) communities like you. Nothing have we omitted from the book, and they (all) shall be gathered to their lord in the end.   The meanings of the verse 6:38 There is not an animal in the earth, or a flying creature flying on two wings between the earth and sky, but they are societies like unto you.   They resemble you in eating, copulation, understanding one another, just as you understand one another: this is a sign for you. We have neglected nothing in the Quran. Allah has mentioned everything in the Quran. Then unto their Lord, all the created beings will be gathered on the Day of Judgment. ——————————————————————–   4) Allah created and proportioned His creature, making it of well-proportioned parts, without irregularities, and guided his creatures to what He had determined.   Verses 87: 1-3   QARIB: exalt the name of your lord, the highest, who has created and shaped, who has ordained and guided, SHAKIR: glorify the name of your lord, the most high, who creates, then makes complete, and who makes (things) according to a measure, then guides (them to their goal), PICKTHAL: praise the name of thy lord the most high, who createth, then disposeth; who measureth, then guideth; YUSUFALI: glorify the name of thy guardian-lord most high, who hath created, and further, given order and proportion; who hath ordained laws. And granted guidance;   The meanings of the verses 87: 1-3   Glorify the Name of your Lord, that is, exalt your Lord above what does not befit Him He is the Most High. Who created and proportioned His creature, making it of well-proportioned parts, without irregularities, And Who determined, what He wants, and ordained and guided his creatures to what He had determined.   ——————————————————————–   5) Woe, to those who write the Scripture with their hands then say: This is from God   Verse 2:79   QARIB: woe to those who write the book with their own hands and then say: ‘this is from Allah, ‘ in order to gain a small price for it. So woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for their earnings. SHAKIR: woe, then, to those who write the book with their hands and then say: this is from Allah, so that they may take for it a small price; therefore woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn PICKTHAL: therefore woe be unto those who write the scripture with their hands and then say, “This is from Allah,” that they may purchase a small gain therewith. Woe unto them for that their hands have written and woe unto them for that they earn thereby. YUSUFALI: then woe to those who write the book with their own hands, and then say: “this is from Allah,” to traffic with it for miserable price! – Woe to them for what their hands do write, and for the gain they make thereby.   The meanings of the verse 2:79 So woe, a severe chastisement, to those who write the Scripture with their hands, that is, fabricating it themselves, then say, ‘This is from God’ to gain a small price in the life of this world. Therefore woe and severe punishment are waiting for them for what their hands have written, of fabrications, and woe to them for their earnings, by way of corruption.   ======================================================   Back to my question to the smart and interested reader: Are the Scholars truthful when they claim that the Quran quoted from the Bible?

I am taken back to the year 2000, when during the then American President Bill Clinton’s historic visit to India, I had started my seminar series called “The Great Indian Dream – India can beat America,” with a front page advertisement in leading dailies welcoming Clinton on the day of his arrival to India. The header of the ad said, “LAST DAYS OF AMERICAN SUPREMACY. ” It has been seven years since then, and the time has come for people to realise the unfolding of the same in front of them and grasp the reasons behind the same. The time for the great power shift has come – the time for power to shift from the American hands to the Chinese, Indian and, dare I say, the Middle Eastern hands. As I wrote in my editorial two issues ago in The Sunday Indian magazine, on account of the cataclysmic losses that each of the US financial behemoths has been suffering, many of them have been incessantly bailed out by Middle Eastern petrodollars. So, while the investments of Kuwait Investment Authority this year have been to the tune of $2 billion in Merrill Lynch, in addition to a bailout package of $3 billion for the beleaguered Citigroup, there are monoliths like Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, whose assets globally are above $800 billion on conservative estimates. Interestingly, this company is now the largest shareholder in Citibank, through its investment of $7. 5 billion, and also has a stake in Carlyle Group – one of the largest American PE players – as well as a 28 per cent share in the London Stock Exchange; no wonder then that for Americans, destroying them physically had assumed so much importance. And, if I were to put it mildly, it has all been a result of America’s stupid belief in fiscal bottom-line oriented shamefully inhuman capitalism. For many, the current crash in the US financial system is comparable to that of the Great Depression of the 30s, while many others are stating it is nothing more than a cyclical trend that would soon get mitigated with time. But what many are not realising is the fact that this disaster is not an incident in isolation – it would invariably have far reaching repercussions and perhaps is the harbinger of the shape of things to come. Economic disasters are nothing new and since the end of the World War II, history has been littered with instances of economies that apparently seemed very strong suddenly going bust and taking a long time to come out of it. Some actually never came out at all. The most recent, glaring and memorable incident that happened in the last decade was the financial crisis of South East Asia. Before their collapse, they were often called the Asian Tigers that could take on Japan, and would be the centre of development for Asia around which other countries of Asia – including China and India – would have their domestic growth. Most of those Asian Tigers, like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and South Korea, were all lured by the illusion created by the US-backed financial institutions. Most of the Foreign Institutional Investors invariably overestimated the growth, and the extent to which these countries could export to the US markets. Based on their overestimated estimates, and suffering from a herd mindset, most of the companies (particularly in the manufacturing segment) made the identical mistake of borrowing short-term money for long-term projects. The world has been an audience to how their entire calculations went awry, leading to a major foreign exchange crisis. In fact, the Central Banks of those countries, following the American footsteps of free-floating of currency, suddenly realised how things had gone far beyond their control. The damage was such that most of the South East Asian countries took nearly a decade to come out of that disaster. The same is the case with Japan which, in spite of being one of the largest economies of the world, is yet to recover from the deep recession that it entered into, thanks to the same real estate bubble collapse that happened there. The same story holds true for countries like Mexico and Argentina as well. It is intriguing that all these economies blindly indoctrinated the American lessons. No wonder that the American school of thought manifests from the Wall Street, which, in its quest to be extra bold, led manyAmerican companies to eventually compromise with fundamentals and look at only profits at all costs. It is rudimentary that a positive growth rate is not a sufficient condition for companies, and far more so in the case of economies on the whole. But given the guiding principles, it has been observed that American companies, in their quest to keep up the growth rates, have gone for whatever means they can use to increase their sales, even if that meant keeping aside the credit unworthiness of the customers – I had referred about this impending crisis due to this system of endless credit and eating up of the future finances of the population in my book, “The Great Indian Dream”. This went on for a long time, aided by the dubious fairy tales being woven by the investment bankers, which lured the banks and financial institutions to lend as much as possible. For long, everything was fine, and the system of borrowing from one to pay the other made sure that the skeletons remained hidden, until it was all too big to hide. For the uninitiated, the near trillion dollar loss due to subprime lending is just one of the many issues that are plaguing US. If one takes into account the massive current account deficit that US has, then the situation becomes even grimmer. While many are expecting this present crisis to tide over soon, what they don’t realize is that there is a recession in US in the offing from which it would take not less than a few years for the nation to come out. . . Just in case they have any chance of recovery. Interestingly, on the flip side, economies that had always been reluctant to be indoctrinated by the American school of thought, have never gone through such recessionary trends, nor do they seem to be getting much affected now. For long, many in the West have criticised China. I’ve been to too many seminars around the globe where pretentious western funded intellectuals with a cigarette in hand made prophecies on how the Chinese bubble would burst, and unread illiterate journalists – drinking American-funded wine – nodded in chorus, pretending to be the most knowledgeable forces on capitalism. Some of them also gave their illiterate criticism on my book, which dared to differ to such uninitiated logic – in some of the financial papers they wrote. China was criticised for their ultra conservative financial policy and the strict control that the Central Bank kept on their financial systems. There was also a huge amount of criticism in terms of the kind of NPAs most of the State run banks in China were/are carrying with them. But then, this is also true that when today, America is reeling under the crisis, Chinese are still achieving a super growth with their existing NPAs. And the same holds true for other Latin American economies like Venezuela, which had been at loggerheads with respect to American policies, and now have been performing pretty decently. And thank god for India’s original allegiance to the planned model of development and the democratic set up of opposition parties not allowing sweeping reforms, that today, the cautious pace of reforms has kept us safe. It can thus be safely said that America and American business principles have created the biggest ever crisis for the globe and those who blindly believed in the same. Had this been even 20 years ago, things would have been very different. But today, as the world stands so very integrated, it stands to collectively pay in some way or the other for this gargantuan mistake of the Americans. However, while I might believe that socialism is the ideal form of economic system that we must all believe in, yet, what is also true is that as a socio-economic system, nothing has more appeal to the human mind than capitalism. So, the way ahead for the world is not anything else but capitalism itself. And this is where the question of saving capitalism from the capitalists comes from. And here are my very precise and brief thoughts on the same (very brief, because after this point I would tend to get too philosophical and academic. However, for those interested in details, please refer to the book my father, Dr Malay Chaudhuri, and I wrote together in 2003, titled, “The Great Indian Dream”). If you want to save capitalism, you have to change the rules of capitalism completely and, dare I say, write them all upside down. Beginning from the term capitalism itself; and rename it as “Happy Capitalism. ” We have to realise that prosperity of a society is not the sum total of the prosperity of its listed companies and the top 20 per cent people. Prosperity of a society is about the prosperity of the bottom 80 per cent of population. It’s only when they have real purchasing power – and not falsely induced credit based purchasing power – that the society will prosper and be happy, the ultimate goal of any humane society. Therefore, instead of the basic tenets of capitalism like ‘Survival of the Fittest’ and the ‘Trickle Down’ theory, we need to start believing in “Survival of the Weakest” and “Trickle Up” theory – both of which speak of the humane face of capitalism through systems of national economic planning, and about growth with equity and growth with control mechanisms to control shameless greed of the capitalists, wherever required (All the three theories, that is, ‘Happy Capitalism’, ‘Survival of the Weakest’ and ‘Trickle-Up theory, have been well elaborated in our book, “The Great Indian Dream”). And I end with a confident assurance that we would have a much better and humane system devoid of such humongous upheavals. . . And that it is Happy Capitalism that will save Capitalism!
